What Is the UK Tourist Visa?

Who Needs a UK Tourist Visa?

3. Nationals who can enter without a visa or ETA. British and Irish passport holders, as well as people with settled status or permission to live, work, or study in the UK, do not need any visa or travel authorisation.

If you visit the UK regularly, you can apply for a long-term Standard Visitor visa valid for 2, 5, or 10 years. Each visit can still last a maximum of 6 months. Long-term visas cost significantly more but save money over time if you travel to the UK frequently.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for a Standard Visitor visa, you must demonstrate that:

• You have a valid passport or travel document that is valid for the entire duration of your stay.
• You intend to leave the UK at the end of your visit and will not attempt to remain.
• You can support yourself financially during your trip, or you have a sponsor who will cover your expenses.
• You can pay for your return or onward journey, or have funding from someone else.
• You will not live in the UK through frequent or successive visits – the UK should not become your main home.

Documents You Will Need

The specific documents required vary by nationality and personal circumstances, but you will generally need:

• A valid passport with at least one blank page
• Completed online application form
• Proof of financial means (bank statements, pay slips, or sponsor letter)
• Proof of accommodation in the UK (hotel booking or invitation letter from a host)
• Travel itinerary or return flight booking
• Evidence of ties to your home country (employment letter, property ownership, family)
• Details of your travel history for the past 10 years

How to Apply for a UK Tourist Visa

Step 2 – Apply Online

Visit the official UK visa application portal and complete the online form. You will need to provide personal details, travel plans, financial information, and answer questions about your immigration and criminal history.

You can save your application and return to it later. If you are applying with family members, each person must submit a separate application and pay their own fee.

The earliest you can apply is 3 months before your planned travel date.

Step 3 – Attend Your Biometrics Appointment

After submitting your online application, you must book and attend an appointment at a visa application centre (VAC). At the appointment, you will:

• Prove your identity with your passport or travel document
• Have your fingerprints and photograph taken (biometric information)
• Submit any required supporting documents

The standard processing time for a UK Standard Visitor visa is 3 weeks (15 working days) from the date you attend your biometrics appointment. However, processing times can vary depending on:

• The country you are applying from
• The time of year (peak seasons like summer and Christmas may cause delays)
• The complexity of your application
• Whether additional documentation or checks are required

Priority processing services are available at many visa application centres for an additional fee. These can reduce the waiting time to around 5 working days, or even 1 working day with super-priority service in some locations.

Permitted Activities on a Tourist Visa

The Standard Visitor visa allows a range of activities during your stay in the UK. Understanding what you can and cannot do helps you avoid problems at the border.

You can:

• Go on holiday or vacation
• Visit family and friends
• Volunteer for up to 30 days with a registered charity
• Pass through the UK in transit to another country
• Attend business meetings, interviews, or conferences
• Take part in certain paid engagements (lectures, performances, as an expert)
• Study or take a course for up to 30 days
• Attend a school exchange programme
• Receive private medical treatment (with the appropriate visa type)
• Visit as an academic, senior doctor, or dentist (with the appropriate visa type)

You cannot:

• Do paid or unpaid work for a UK employer
• Claim public funds or benefits

UK Tourist Visa vs ETA – What Is the Difference?

Many visitors confuse the Standard Visitor visa with the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). While both allow short-term visits, they serve different nationalities and have very different application processes.
